Why Dolby Atmos Is Not Reaching Your Soundbar
Atmos fails for one of five reasons: the television is converting audio to PCM before it leaves the set, the connection cannot carry the format, the soundbar does not decode it, the plan excludes it, or the title has no Atmos track. This walks the chain and names which one applies to you.

How this works, in full
Dolby Atmos is object based, meaning sounds are placed in a space rather than assigned to fixed channels. It reaches you inside one of two carriers, and almost every argument about Atmos comes from not separating them.
The two carriers
Dolby Digital Plus with Joint Object Coding is lossy and comparatively small, and it is what every major streaming service uses. Standard HDMI ARC has enough bandwidth for it.
Dolby TrueHD with Atmos is lossless and much larger, and it is what sits on 4K Blu-ray discs. ARC cannot carry it, and this is the one case that genuinely requires eARC.
So the usual advice, that you need eARC for Atmos, is right for discs and wrong for streaming. If your source is an app, ARC is sufficient.
The order the checks run in
The tool reports the first link that stops the signal rather than every link that could, because working through a list in the wrong order is why people give up. It checks from the most physical to the least.
- Can the far end decode it? If the soundbar or receiver does not support Atmos, nothing earlier in the chain matters.
- Can the connection carry it? Optical carries Dolby Digital and DTS at 5.1, and both Atmos carriers are larger, so optical is a physical dead end. ARC carries the streaming carrier but not TrueHD.
- Is the television flattening it? Televisions default to converting audio to PCM before sending it out. PCM is channel based, so an object based signal converted to PCM stops being object based. This is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix: change Digital Audio Out, HDMI Audio Format or Audio Output Format from PCM to Bitstream, Pass-through or Auto.
- Does the plan include it? Several services restrict spatial audio to higher tiers, which is a subscription question rather than a wiring one.
- Does the title have an Atmos track?Most do not. The title’s audio list in the app is the answer, and no setup produces a track that is not there.
The case most guides miss
If the player connects straight into the soundbar or receiver, and video passes on to the television from there, the television is not in the audio path at all. Its audio settings are then irrelevant, and time spent in that menu is wasted. The tool stops asking about them when you describe that setup.
One more that costs people an evening: ARC and eARC work on one specific HDMI socket on the television, and it is labelled. A cable in any other port carries no audio back to the soundbar whatsoever.
Questions people ask
- Do I need HDMI eARC for Dolby Atmos?
- Not for streaming. Streaming services send Atmos inside Dolby Digital Plus with Joint Object Coding, which standard HDMI ARC carries. You need eARC for Dolby TrueHD with Atmos, which is what sits on 4K Blu-ray discs.
- Can optical carry Dolby Atmos?
- No. An optical connection carries Dolby Digital and DTS at 5.1, and neither Dolby Digital Plus nor Dolby TrueHD fits. If your soundbar is connected by optical, no setting will produce Atmos.
- Why does my soundbar say PCM instead of Atmos?
- Because the television is converting the audio before sending it. PCM is a channel-based format, so an object-based signal is flattened on the way out. Change the television audio output from PCM to Bitstream, Pass-through or Auto.
- Does it matter whether the app runs on the television or on a streaming box?
- Yes. The app negotiates Atmos with the hardware it runs on, so a television app and an external box are separate paths with separate capabilities. If a box is connected straight to the soundbar or receiver, the television audio settings stop mattering entirely.
